During my visit to Sumaya Restaurant, I was intrigued to see pork on the menu, a rarity in the area, and decided to give it a try. The seating looked comfortable, which was a plus.
The Wi-Fi speed was low at around 7Mbps, but a ventilator right above me and a few scattered plugs were convenient.
For starters, I chose a Goan dish called Chicken Sukkha. The waiter seemed overly concerned about my order, repeatedly asking if I wanted roti or rice with it.
I had to reassure him that I’d order more later and that I didn’t want rice with this dish.
The Chicken Sukkha turned out to be quite different from what I’d seen online. It was a straightforward dish with onions and spicy green peppers. The chicken was okay, but overall, it was a rather uninspiring dish.
Almost an hour later, the waiter returned to check if I wanted to order anything else which kind of bugged me and again i assured him i am going to order soon.
I then decided to try the pork vindaloo with two butter rotis. The serving was a bit small, but the gravy was flavorful, although quite fluid and spicier than I’m accustomed to.
Some pieces of pork were chewy, yet overall, they were tasty, with a pleasing amount of fat. And the rotis were thin and tasty as well and fit well with the dish.
For dessert, I chose ‘Hello to the Queen,’ priced at only 150 rupees, so i expected it to be small and unimpressive.
However, it turned out to be an amazing surprise. Though served in a small cup as i guessed, the dessert was very impressive.
It actually contained hot chocolate which is a rarity, well-mixed with delicious biscuits. The bananas were adequately caramelized, although there weren’t many.
The scoop of ice cream was generously sized, perfectly complementing the cup’s contents.
Despite its size and the lack of abundant bananas, it captured the essence of what a ‘Hello to the Queen‘ should be, making it the best version I’ve had in South Goa so far. A slightly larger serving would be even more delightful.
Overall, the experience at Sumaya Restaurant started bad but improved gradually. The low Wi-Fi speed isn’t ideal for nomads, but the setting is pleasant, and I managed to work there for almost four hours.
